People I meet nowadays sometimes ask if I have photos from my dancing years. Well, the answer is yes, obviously! Dance overwhelmed 20 years of my daily life! Here is one of me from a few years ago that I retrieved from some archives this morning.
This position was my trademark as a dancer — an extended back attitude on releve. It’s my favorite expression of the passionate, design-informed fluidity that is dance. Creating art with the body, and almost, maybe, flying.
Danny Tidwell (former American Ballet Theater dancer and runner up on Season 3 of So You Think You Can Dance) saw this photo once and turned to me to say, ‘fierce attitude.’ Coming from someone who can do a dozen pirouettes in one go, I was floored. You never forget your idols…
